WE HAVE AN EAMES CHAIR! WE HAVE A REAL EAMES CHAIR! Did I mention that we have an Eames chair? For us architecture nerds this is amaaazing!
I think I have a chair problem. There are all of these amazing chairs out there that I have a problem even buying a pair. There are soooo many chairs that I would like to have for our house and a few that I have purchased already. I couldn’t not share all of the chairs we have in our house, especially with the holidays coming up. Between dinners, gift sharing, brunch, and hanging out there are going to be a lot of butts in everyone’s chairs this year I am sure. Some new, some vintage, designer, replica…everything. Chairs that is….not butts.
Lounge Chairs
First up, our Eames chair!! For those of you not familiar with the Eames collection, Charles and Ray Eames were a very famous married couple that designed homes and furniture in the late 1940’s. For more info check out the Eames Office for all things Eames. I scored this chair from a furniture vendor that I work with for less than a quarter of the list price. Someone returned this because it was ordered in the wrong color. Yes!!!!!
This chair is a legacy chair for sure. You buy this surprisingly comfy piece of furniture as an art piece for your house. They come with authentication letters and can be willed to future generations. If you can’t afford the official version there are a bunch of copied versions out there.
Next up, my vintage white vinyl butterfly/womb inspired chair. I love this chair. It was given to my family as a hand me down from my Aunt’s college apartment. It was in my basement all through highschool and I took it with me to my first apartment in college. This chair has moved with me from Wisconsin to Minnesota, Colorado, and back to Minnesota again. It’s a great chair and I will be passing this on to future generations. I haven’t seen anything exactly like it before but this one from West Elm is in the same spirit.
Here’s a lounge chair from CB2 that I have had my eye on for years. Years. I don’t know where it’s going to fit yet in the house but I am determined to find a spot. It’s a little modern, a little midcentury and it comes in a 59, yep 59 colors. Rockstar!
Dining Chairs
Up next, the Emeco Navy Chair. These are the first chairs Ben and I bought when we had any sort of extra income. There is a great history behind these aluminum chairs. There were designed for submarines in 1944. They are lightweight, durable, and can withstand salt water. Very important on a ship. We couldn’t afford to buy the real Emeco chairs but we did find a similar version at Crate & Barrel. The difference is that the Crate and Barrel chairs have 4 back supports and the Emeco chair has 3 and comes in a bunch of fun colors. Someday I might buy a fun colored chair for our office. When I work on my computer I often sit in this chair. It just seems to be the correct proportions for me.
Next up, the Eames molded fiberglass chair. I couldn’t score the deal of a lifetime on these chairs so we bought replicas. There is a lot of discussion, heated arguments even about buying replica designs. My perspective is this. If you can afford to buy the real thing you should. If that means saving up for the real one, scoring a return like me or finding a vintage piece, that works. If you cannot swing the real one then by all means, purchase a replica. Everyone should have great design in their life. Even if it means non original pieces. One word of caution, check the quality on the replicas. Read the reviews online. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I purchased these replica Eames chairs on Wayfair. They are molded plastic, not fiberglass, but are sturdy. These are the perfect fit to pair with our aluminum chairs.
Next is the molded wood chair. These are all over the place! It seems like all modern stores have one. They are great because they look cool and modern, they are comfortable, come in multiple colors and are super affordable. The original chair is the Series 7 by Arne Jacobsen. Ours are from Crate and Barrel but there are cute ones from IKEA, Target, West Elm…These chairs are the best for mixing and matching.
Now the chair that I swoon over. These are not part of my house yet. Yet. They are by a local MN company that is working its way to having stores in a few larger cities. This Real Good Chair from Bludot rocks my world and I don’t have anywhere in my house to put it. Ahhh…design problems. These chairs have a great design, I love the copper color, and the design is one of the most unique I have seen in a long time. It comes in a bunch of colors too. Someday I will find a place to put these chairs.
Kitchen stool
Here is where I think we struggle. We have kitchen stools and they are ok. They work but they aren’t very comfortable, they don’t swivel and they are a little awkward and heavy so you can’t get in and out of them easily. I originally bought these stools because I sat on a similar stool at the Minnesota state fair at Lulu’s public house and they molded to you. The fair stool felt like it was made for me. I also happened to be drinking a delicious blueberry beer. These stools aren’t nearly as comfortable so I have my eye on a few new kitchen stools.
I have been thinking about these elementary school art stools. They are comfortable, nostalgic, and would fit in with our midcentury house vibe. I remember building clay animals and painting beautiful hung on the fridge pictures sitting in this chair. I think these could be really cool as an alternative option for a kitchen since they are not usually found there.
I am also considering something in a bright color. I tend to stick with neutrals for a lot of things but I am thinking a bright orange or turquoise could fit right in with our kitchen. I have been eyeing this adjustable barber chair from Target. It seems really cool and fits in with the retro vibe.
One idea we have been toiling around with is to make our own stools. It would be time consuming but I think it could be a cool project. Ben has made furniture before and we could create something totally unique that no one else has. I think this could be a fun winter design project to build in the spring. We’ll see if I can talk him into designing something for us.
Is everyone overloaded with awesome chairs? I know I am. Now that I have shared all of my cool chairs and my wishlist for chairs take a look at your own house chairs. Do you have a thing for chairs? With all of the cool chairs out there how did you choose the chairs for your house? Now get some butts in those seats!

Who would have imagined a $25 chair I bought for my first apartment would have such a life. It did spend time in your Dad’s first apartment in Milwaukee. I think it is one of the most comfortable chairs ever made.
